Vidushi Jyoti Hegde is renowned as India’s first and only female Rudra Veena player. She has made unparalleled efforts to preserve and promote this rare and traditional instrument. Her musical journey has been guided by eminent gurus such as Ustad Asad Ali Khan, Dr. Bundu Madhav Pathak, and Pt. Indudhar Nirodi, which reflects in her playing style that beautifully blends the Khandar Vani and Agra gharana traditions.

Despite numerous challenges, Jyoti Hegde has brought global recognition to the Rudra Veena—a traditional, male-dominated, and rare instrument. She has performed at prestigious platforms like the Darbar Festival in London and has been honored with awards such as the Dhrupad Mani Award and Nad Ninidhi Award.

To preserve Rudra Veena and Dhrupad traditions, Jyoti Hegde established the Himalayan Universal Trust and Veena Gram Gurukul in Sirsi, Karnataka. These institutions follow the Gurukul system, emphasizing structured training, creative exploration, and Indian cultural values. Many of her disciples have achieved independent success, contributing to the continuation of this rich tradition.

The Rudra Veena, known as the “King of Instruments,” was traditionally played in temples for meditation. Thanks to Jyoti Hegde’s efforts, this rare instrument has been revived and gained renewed prominence. Her work has inspired women to learn the Rudra Veena, restoring its cultural and historical significance. Jyoti Hegde’s contribution is truly inspirational for musicians and ensures a bright future for the Dhrupad and Rudra Veena traditions.
